Willbee the Bumblebee

Here’s a YouTube of the song:

This book is by an artist from New Zealand, and published by Scholastic, Inc., but is weirdly not available in the USA.  Hmmm.  This is one of those mysteries of publication…why can’t we buy this here?

I’m not sure how this sort of thing works (living in the last millenia, alas) but this interactive app version of the song looks interesting:

THE SINGABLE PICTURE BOOKS OF CRAIG SMITH

The Fox Went Out on a Chilly Night ” is, in my experience, one of the most universally loved of Singable Picture Books.  It’s almost like they can’t help themselves, that fox casts a spell.  We open the book, the tune begins and the children are THERE and especially for Peter Spier’s amazingly detailed pictoral storytelling.

Another universal favorite is “The Star Spangled Banner,” also extravagantly illustrated by Peter Spier, but not just that first verse that we sing as our National Anthem, but the ENTIRE poem penned by Francis Scott Key during the War of 1812.  It is fantastic.

Peter Spier’s repertoire is long and wide-ranging.  Here are his Singable Picture Books:

Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket (The Detroit Institute of Arts) by Whistler, 1875

I’ve greatly enjoyed watching Tim Marlow‘s “Great Artists 2” series on our Netflix instant cue.  In one episode, Tim Marlow profiles the great artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, including a segment about Whistler’s filing charges of libel against an English art critic for the critic’s comments about Whistler’s 1875 painting, “Nocturne in Black and Gold: The Falling Rocket.”

Something Whistler said struck me as important regarding the life and work of an artist (or the effort and expereince anyone can put into what they do, elevating the work to an art).  As described by Tim Marlow, the critics attorney asked Whislter about the price he has put on the work of art in question (commenting on the time and labor he put into creating it, basing his ideas of “value” on time and labor alone), saying “The Labor of 2 days?  Is that for which you ask 200 guineas?”

Whistler’s response is important, because it stresses the intangible but indispensable value of artistic experience and skill by saying, “No.  I ask it for the knowledge I’ve gained in the work of a lifetime.”

It would be a mistake to undervalue artistic experience and the knowledge, wisdom, skills and innovation which come from year of hard work.

The case was over this

Art by Alex, Kindergarten 2011-2012

Dear Friends,

This has been a wonderful year for Sing Books with Emily, but you may not know it since the singing mostly took place with approximately 175 Sing Books gatherings at Tuckahoe Elementary School in Arlington, VA. I also wrote daily posts for the Sing Books with Emily blog, increased the Sing Books repertoire with new songs in Singable Picture Books, wrote a couple little tunes, made a few new books, and got to visit homes and other schools in DC and VA. The whole year was joyously filled with song and the beautiful growing spirits of young ones.

I’m thrilled to bursting to share some of the new songs and books (and lots of the good old favorites) with friends at Prince William County Public Libraries this summer.

Come along and join in the musical fun with songs like “Grandma’s Feather Bed,” “Hippopotamus Song,” and “Puff the Magic Dragon.”

The first library visit is tomorrow:

Admittedly, I avoided this book at first (parodies of traditional camp fire songs), not wanting exposure to the gross, goth world it promises…but it kept presenting itself.

Turns out, “Sipping Spiders Through a Straw (Campfire Songs for Monsters)” is impossibly amusing and I keep laughing despite myself.

Yes, the book is goth and gross, but it is funny.

Read, Sing, Play ABC Sing-Along: A Singable Picture Book
http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/2011/05/02/read-sing-play-abc-sing-along-a-singable-picture-book/

Boo-hoo the year is through.  But a great year it was and I adored every minute visiting classes with Sing Books.  This last week was very special to me, getting to visit Ms. Campbell’s Kindergarten class for the very first time.  They were as sweet as could be and seemed to really enjoy the songs.  I also got to visit the classes of Ms. Allen, Ms. Morgan, Ms. Howard, Ms. Mason, Ms. Anctil, and Mr. Mitchell.   I am sad to say farewell to the rising First Graders, but hope they carry the song in their hearts and, if fate allows, will look forward to seeing them in their new classes in the coming years.

In each of the classes we sang a selection from the following list of Singable Picture Books:

When I started singing “Fifty Nifty States” last year, a few people suggested that a State Capitals Song would be great for the Sing Books repertoire as well.  I tucked the idea away and just recently pulled it out of the hopper again.  I was planning to write a song myself, thinking the “Can-Can” would be a good tune to use, when in searching for a list of state capitals online, I found a video with the song already written to the tune of “Turkey in the Straw” and then set about making a book for it.

My idea for the book is that when we start singing the states, I colored just the states mentioned in that line, for example:

Finally at the end, we can fill in the whole map and sing “That’s all the capitals there are!”

Addendum August 2012

Though it’s going to take me a while to master singing “The United States State Capitals Song,” I didn’t want to delay making a scratch track of the tune for friends who have the book and need a little help with the rhythms and spacing of verses.  I’d love to record this song in a studio sometime, but until then, here’s me singing into my little digital recorder,

SING ALONG RESOURCES AND PRINTABLE MATERIALS
http://singbookswithemily.wordpress.com/sing-along-resources-2/

In putting a package together for a sweet baby to be born soon, I decided to give a copy of, “Frosty the Snowman” among a couple other titles as a “welcome to the world of song” baby gift.  In doing to, I noticed that the post did not include a sing-along music suggestion.  It is always fun to sing a song, even a-capella, especially with a tune as universally familiar as “Frosty,” but singing with music is always MORE fun.

For a “Frosty” instrumental sing-along, my favorite track is by Smoky Mountain Band on their album, “Christmas in the Smoky Mountains”

If you look for the whole album, “Frosty the Snowman” is on Track 3.

Purchase or preview the song, here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QM8H3O/ref=dm_dp_trk3?ie=UTF8&qid=1339082528&sr=301-2

I’ve got an affinity for this kind of bluegrass country musical arrangement played on these instruments which are exuberant and joyful with a twinge of sorrow.

If you use this track for singing Richard Cowdrey’s illustration (my admitted favorite), you’ll sing the song through twice and sing the “thumpety thump thump” refrain twice at the end.
