Making up Limericks for Friends!
Posted on: March 16, 2012
I was writing a “Happy Birthday” message to my friend Bill B. on Facebook the other day and suddenly got an overwhelming urge to write him a Happy Birthday Limerick.
First I should say that Bill is one of the funniest people I know and something about him ignites my inner imp. Of course, this is largely due to the hilarious things he says and does. For example, We have mutual friends who have a beautiful home where they frequently host musical performances. Their home is decorated with wonderful art and interesting objects. One of the objects is a vintage cigarette lighter that is decorated with a portrait of Mao. The lighter plays a song when its lid is lifted and Bill can sing along with it sounding like a Chinese instrument and it is both funny and fascinating and amazing. One of the limerick lines in Bill B’s Birthday Limerick mentions this story.

Here are the words:
There was a fun fella Bill B.
I laugh when with Mao’s lighter he sings
But so much more is what I love him for
That wonderful fella Bill B.
I hope the spirit stikes me to make more of these. It was a sooooo much fun!

I Googled “Mao Lighter” and found pictures and YouTubes about it…lots of them!
Here’s someone’s YouTube playing the lighter:

It looks something like this:

I’d like to encourage people of every age to make up and sing limericks!
It is incredibly fun and can bring lots of joy to those you know. For children, it would be an excellent exercise in using and creating language and poetry with the extra bonus of making music. And, I cannot over-emphasize the FUN Factor!
