One of the most beautiful and, some say, one of the saddest of all Christmas Songs was first sung by Judy Garland in the 1944 film, “Meet Me in St. Louis.”
But you can sing it now with this fun, cheerful little book,

HAVE YOURSELF A MERRY LITTLE CHRISTMAS
Words by Hugh Martin
Music by Ralph Blane
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Let your heart be light
From now on,
Our troubles will be out of sight.
Have yourself a merry little Christmas,
Make the Yule-tide gay,
From now on,
Our troubles will be miles away.
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us
Gather near to us once more.
Through the years
We all will be together,
If the Fates allow
Hang a shining star upon the highest bough. *
And have yourself A merry little Christmas now.

Reading the wiki article about the song (and Singable Picture Book), “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” it was interesting to learn that lyricist Hugh Martin altered a lyric at the behest of Frank Sinatra who requested the change to make the song more cheerful. So Mr. Martin changed the lyric from “We’ll have to muddle through somehow” to “Hang a shining star upon the highest bough.” But the original lyric as sung by Judy Garland in the movie helps with a little variation I made up create a sweet New Year song. I was hoping to find an alternative, or something in addition to, “Auld Lang Syne” to celebrate the coming of a New Year, but not much to be found.
**********************
Just off the top of my head, I sang my children a lullaby, “Have Yourself a Happy Little New Year,” a simple alteration of, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” Doing this will send shivers down the spine of many a musical purist, but I think it’s OK as a sweet sentiment to a loved one:
HAVE YOURSELF A HAPPY LITTLE NEW YEAR
Have yourself a happy little new year.
Let your heart be light.
From now on our troubles will be out of sight.
Have yourself a happy little new year
Make the new year gay.
This year all our troubles will be miles away.
Here we are as in olden days,
Happy golden days of yore.
Faithful friends who are dear to us,
Gather near to us once more.
Through the years, we all will be together,
If the fates allow.
Until then, we’ll have to muddle through somehow.
So have yourself a happy little new year now.

Andrea Marcovicci is one of the greats of the American Cabaret genre. Few artists give such detailed study to the knowledge and passionate delivery of song. She’s also got a terrific sense of humor. Her performance patter introduction and performance of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” from her LIVE FROM LONDON album is an example. It’s track 17 on the album. She gives a great patter introduction with historical background and interesting information about the song and a wonderful cabaret performance.

RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER
Words and Music by Johnny Marks
Based on the Character Created by Robert L. May
You know Dasher and Dancer
And Prancer and Vixen
Comet and Cupid
And Donner and Blitzen.
But do you recall
The most famous reindeer of all?
Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer
Had a very shiny nose
And if you ever saw it
You would even say it glows.
All of the other reindeer
Used to laugh and call him names
They never let poor Rudolph
Join in any reindeer games.
Then one foggy Christmas Eve
Santa came to say:
“Rudolph with your nose so bright,
Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”
Then all the reindeer loved him
As they shouted out with glee
Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer
You’ll go down in history!

Kids enjoy singing the song with extra “comments” and actions.
Here are the lyrics and “comments” that kids can sing in (RED) and actions in (GREEN) italic

“The Christmas Song” (aka “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”) is one of my favorite songs of all time. Its long lyric lines, lovely images, and warm sentiments make it a delight for every listen and every sing. You can sing it with holiday bravura or as a gentle lullaby (as we often enjoy it in the G-House just before bedtime).
Written by the great singer Mel Torme and his friend Bob Wells, it seems like lots of artists agree with me as it is one of the most recorded Christmas songs.
Here’s a wiki article with some interesting info:

THE CHRISTMAS SONG (CHESTNUTS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE)
Music and Lyrics by Mel Torme and Bob Wells
(Optional intro)
All through the year we waited
Waited through Spring and Fall
To hear silver bells ringing and wintertime bringing
The happiest season of all…
Chestnuts roasting on an open fire,
Jack Frost nipping on your nose,
Yuletide carols being sung by a choir,
And folks dressed up like Eskimos.
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe,
Help to make the season bright.
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow,
Will find it hard to sleep tonight.
They know that Santa’s on his way;
He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh.
And every mother’s child is going to spy,
To see if reindeer really know how to fly.
And so I’m offering this simple phrase,
To kids from one to ninety-two,
Although its been said many times, many ways,
Merry Christmas to you
(Optional outro)
Love and joy come to you
And to all your loved ones, too
And God bless you and send you
A Happy New Year
And God send you a Happy New Year!

FROSTY THE SNOWMAN
Words and Music by Steve Nelson and Jack Rollins
Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul,
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal.
Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale they say.
He was made of snow but the children
Know how he came to life one day.
There must have been some magic in that
Old silk hat they found.
For when they placed it on his head
He began to dance around.
O Frosty the snowman
Was alive as he could be,
And the children say he could laugh
And play just the same as you and me.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Look at Frosty go.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Over the hills of snow.
Frosty the snowman knew
The sun was hot that day,
So he said, “Let’s run and
We’ll have some fun
Now before I melt away.”
Down to the village
With a broomstick in his hand
Running here and there
All around the square saying,
“Catch me if you can!”
He led them down the streets of town
Right to the traffic cop.
And he only paused a moment when
He heard him holler, “Stop!”
For Frosty the snow man
Had to hurry on his way,
But he waved goodbye saying,
“Don’t you cry,
I’ll be back again some day.”
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Look at Frosty go.
Thumpetty thump thump,
Thumpety thump thump,
Over the hills of snow.

It is always fun to sing a song, even a-capella, especially with a tune as universally familiar as “Frosty,” but singing with music is always MORE fun.
For a “Frosty” instrumental sing-along, my favorite track is by Smoky Mountain Band on their album, “Christmas in the Smoky Mountains”
If you look for the whole album, “Frosty the Snowman” is on Track 3.
Purchase or preview the song, here:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000QM8H3O/ref=dm_dp_trk3?ie=UTF8&qid=1339082528&sr=301-2
I’ve got an affinity for this kind of bluegrass country musical arrangement played on these instruments which are exuberant and joyful with a twinge of sorrow.
If you use this track for singing Richard Cowdrey’s illustration (my admitted favorite), you’ll sing the song through twice and sing the “thumpety thump thump” refrain twice at the end.
**********************
Song History
First recorded by Gene Autry in 1950, “Frosty” was a song written with hopes of riding on the popular sleigh bells of Rudolph.

At the end of the song Fifty Nifty States each group of singers gets a chance to show state pride and shout the name of the group’s favorite state (likely the state in which that group is singing).
I’ve made a few gifts of the copies of the book lately and a couple of them have gone out to other states. As I create them, I will post additional “favorite” states, so that if you get the book from me (my printable copy of which comes stocked with “Virginia” as the “favorite” state), then you can visit my blog here to print off a page to reflect your personal favorite.

This is an nice, simple piano arrangement of this song that plays for 4 verses, which works nicely with the Groom/Warnes “Silent Night” adaptation, which has 4 verses.
Many of the other books illustrate the 3 original verses of the song. In that case, you could still use this piano instrumental, but just turn back to the front of the book and repeat the first verse.
For books with just 3 verses of the original song, I also like the “Silent Night” instrumental in:

This instrumental uses bluegrass instruments, has a perfect (not too slow) tempo and singable key.

The lovely Christmas carol, “Silent Night” has a history as sweet as its tune. In early 19th century German, a poem was written, an organ was broken and Christmas was approching so a friend asked a friend to set his poem to music for guitar.
Read the story (and see pictures and painting of the places and people), here:

I love this version of Silent night, sung by John Denver and the Muppets, for it’s loveliness and Muppet sweetness from the TV special, but because Mr. Denver takes some time in the middle of the song to tell the history of the song and how it came to be:

Here is a video of just the recording from the album,

SILENT NIGHT
Words by Joseph Mohr
Music by Franz Gruber
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon Virgin
Mother and Child
Holy Infant so tender and mild
Sleep in heavenly peace
Sleep in heavenly peace.
Glories stream from heaven afar
Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia
Christ the Savior is born.
Son of God, love’s pure light
Radiant beams from Thy holy face
With the dawn of redeeming grace
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth
Jesus, Lord at Thy birth.
