Two authors worth mentioning in this context are A. A. Milne (books of poetry, and Pooh, too) and Kenneth Grahame (“Wind in the Willows“).  Grahame and Milne both wrote stories for their sons which became wonderful works of children’s literature and which, delightfully, contain poetry that can be sung:
